The fair has been an annual event in my family as long as I’ve been an adult. Ron and I used to go to the Dixie Classic Fair every year for a night or two depending on when the boys wanted to go. It was always a fun visit, but it was just a visit.
A different kind of fair
But this fair is different. This is the Routt County Fair. In this fair the grandkids participate to show all their hard 4H work that started at the end of last year’s fair. In this fair, I participate. Definitely different levels of investment, but still an investment of time and energy I never experienced in the past.
My first routt county fair entries
In fact, last year was the very first year for me to put entries in Home Arts.
The picture won a 2nd place ribbon. The mixed medium won reserve grand champion. Needless to say, it made me hungry for more!

This year, however, was busy with RePower, and my crafting life took a serious hit.
But every time I made something, I looked at it and wondered, “Is this piece fair worthy?”
Some things were. Some things weren’t. Some things that might have been were gifts that left my hands.

Still, there were a few things across the year that made it to the fair pile.
And much to my delight, most of those received a ribbon!
The best part of the fair
As fun as winning is, the best part of the Routt County Fair is the grandkids. A day spent with the girls playing in the LM Light barn. Gathering pretend eggs, digging potatoes, petting chickens and rabbits. Watching the boys compete with their year-long projects. And finally, there was the goat-roping — a buckle winning event for their team effort!
